Fingrid's cross-border transmission line projects named to the European Commission's list of Projects of Common Interest

Fingrid’s three cross-border transmission line projects have been named to the European Commission’s list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI). Being included in the list indicates that the Commission considers these projects to be essential for achieving Europe’s energy policy goals. The PCI status makes it easier to promote the projects.

Main grid development plan strengthens Finland's competitiveness


Fingrid has published its main grid development plan for the period from 2024 to 2033. The main grid development plan is published every two years and presents the main grid’s development needs and planned investments for the next ten years. The updated development plan foresees approximately EUR 4 billion of investment in the main grid. These investments lay the foundations for Finland’s competitiveness by enabling investments in clean electricity production and industry in Finland.

Fingrid together with the other Nordic TSOs released the report Nordic Grid Development Perspective 2023. This report presents an overview of the anticipated future of the Nordic power system, providing insights for stakeholders, policymakers, and industry professionals. The report is attached to the bulletin.

Changes in the security environment highlight the importance of cooperation among transmission system operators in the Baltic Sea region


The heads of the transmission system operators (TSOs) in the Baltic Sea region held a meeting on Friday 8 December. The TSOs work in continuous cooperation to operate the power system and jointly plan the longer-term development of the system. This time, the agenda included the adequacy of electricity this winter, the integration of the Baltic electricity networks into the Central European system, and the prospects for offshore wind power. The Baltic Sea region TSOs are the operators from the Nordic countries, the Baltic countries, Poland and Germany.

Fingrid is investigating possible main grid connection points for offshore wind power

Interest in building offshore wind power in Finland has grown exponentially. Fingrid has launched a study to preliminarily determine possible connection points for offshore wind projects to the main grid. The results of the study are expected to be available by summer 2024.

The ENTSO-E Winter Outlook 2023-2024 highlights an improved adequacy outlook compared with 2022-2023 with limited electricity supply risks in remote areas. European TSOs continue to monitor the adequacy situation throughout the winter period.

With many working groups operating side-by-side on a main grid worksite, everyone must know exactly what work is underway and which stage it has reached. Since the start of June, it has been mandatory to announce the need for additional earthing – this is one of the steps Fingrid has taken to ensure safety.
